Green Cleaning FAQ’S
Q: What is Green Cleaning?
A: Green cleaning is cleaning that protects health without harming the environment. The environment including inside the home, place of work etc as well as the wider environment. Green cleaning is just about using less harmful products, it’s also about how one cleans to ensure that health and the environment is protected.
Q: Does Green Cleaning really make a difference?
A: Evidence states that improving indoor air quality is paramount to health and productivity, using less toxic chemicals enhances this as they are known to affect breathing, concentration and general health. Also, which type of cleaning products used on which surfaces will either extend or diminish that material, green cleaning products protects your furnishings and extends the lifespan of materials in the building.
Q: What does Green Cleaning cost?
A: Green cleaning can be comparable to standard cleaning products depending on which ones are bought, but in the main they work out to be a little cheaper. And as the trend now is to make household cleaning products using standard household food stuff, this can work out to be even cheaper. Another factor to consider though is any extra costs can be offset by increased cleaning performance, improved air quality and longer lasting furniture and furnishings.
Q: Where do I start?
A: To make the transition from chemical cleaning to green cleaning practices can seem daunting, so the first step is to start small, and on a room by room basis. By making a list of all the chemical cleaners you use on a regular basis you will then know which ones to substitute first. After that it’s just a case of going room by room until you are where you want to be.
Q: How will I know if it’s working?
A: One of the ways you could measure this is to count the number of chemical cleaners you’ve eliminated and substituted for a greener alternative. Plus you could then assess the cleaning power of the alternative remembering that improved air quality and better health are the upsides of using greener products. Ultimately decide what you want from your greener products and assess that, noting that if you are not in poor health then it will take time to notice the effects of less chemicals in your home environment. But over time your sense of smell will get better and you will notice when you go into a more chemically based environment now you’ve cleaned yours up.
