Cleaning Chemicals Cause Asthma In Children

by True-Comfort Cleaning Services

Children and asthma mail onlineToo much exposure to cleaning products could cause asthma according to a study done in 2008 on the link between childhood asthma and indoor pollution.

The study outlines the risk expectant mothers can have on their unborn child if they use a lot of household cleaning products.  If they do then there is a risk of increased wheezing and asthma.

The risk isn’t just when the woman is pregnant but if she uses a lot of household cleaning chemicals shortly after birth this affects the baby as much

Other research that I’ve done answers the question of why.

Pound for pound children inhale more, than adults and touch more surfaces than adults because they sit on floors and touch all parts of furniture, as well as putting toys into their mouths.
And this is why children exposed to these products have up to a 41% increase in wheezing by the time they reach 7 years old.  Added to this, the research also identified that children in this category have slightly lower lung functioning.

Now although during the study the researchers couldn’t find which chemicals specifically were responsible, previous research points to the fumes which we all breath in when we use these products as being responsible.

Another interesting aspect to this study revealed that children from cleaner homes were more at risk of developing asthma especially if the adult used disinfectants, bleach, air fresheners and aerosols, and given that these are wildly popular now, especially the plug in varieties, this is a grave worry indeed.
